I went this morning to the first bike shop. It was closer to my house. I picked up a seat post (it took the more common 27.2 mm size) though it is silver and not black. I will try to take it back or replace it somehow. It didn’t bother me at the time, but it does now. Yes, it is just a crash-about bike – function TOTALLY over form – but I still want it to match. That may change over time. Anyway, learn from my lesson on that one: Buy only what you want. I also picked up brake pads, which I also changed my mind about after leaving the shop (more on this later in the post). The cables, and housing were simple to pick out and not very expensive. The chain was a bit more than I expected, but still not ridiculous ($15 instead of $10). I took a look at rear wheels. A 9-speed cassette hub body is the same as an 8-speed, so that makes it easier to find. I find a couple hanging from the ceiling, as seems to be the practice at the shop, that are somewhat comparable /matching to the existing front wheel. They start at about $60 for the least-attractive one and go up from there. The one I liked was $150.

I have decided to try to find a used rear wheel. It’s a well-used bike that is only going to get more destroyed, so why put a nice shiny new wheel on it?

I am intrigued by the idea of doing this (see http://www.63xc.com/jasom/milldisc.htm) but am thinking that the vertical drop outs (see http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html#vertical) will pose too much of a nuisance (see http://fixedgeargallery.com/resources/stevens/ and http://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php). I think I’ll try that on a different frame with easier-to-work with horizontal drop outs some other day.

The mechanic at the first shop said that he did not service front shocks – too many parts, too many companies, too much work for what (especially old ones) are worth. This is not the end of the world for me. The Rock Shox that are on the bike are rigid. They do not move at all. I don’t mind because I like a rigid fork, so this will do for now. Perhaps some riding on them will limber them up a bit. I might think of replacing them eventually, but for now, I don’t even know how the bike rides. I think I will make it ride-able first, then decide. For now, I’ll just look forward to riding it soon and keep an eye out on eBay.

It turns out that I have to take apart the trigger shifters to change the cables. The mechanic at the shop said that the insides were hard to replace on the ones I have on this bike. This surprised me because usually companies make and keep replacement parts for their top-model products. For now, it looks as if these ones do work, so that little tidbit will go in the back of ye olde brain for another day …. hopefully one far from now.

After dropping off the first trip of stuff, I went to the other bike shop, which is also located conveniently close to my house. I found a pair of grips I liked better than the selection at the first bike shop and after asking, I had a couple of pairs of Kool Stop Salmon’s ordered. They come highly recommended by the bike guru Sheldon Brown (http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/brakeshoes.html), so I thought I would give them a try. They aren’t much more expensive than the other brands ($15 instead of $12), so I thought it was a worthwhile expense. I love the ugly colour they are. I thought it was very fitting for this bike.

Come to think of it, this bike is still without a name. I enjoy naming my bikes. I like when the name sounds pretty, but then has a more practical meaning. For example, my red road fix is named Sanguine, a word meaning both “cheerfully optimistic, hopeful, or confident” and “bloody” (see dictionary.com). I also have a mountain bike named Mud Muffin. I will think more on this later. In the mean time, please make suggestions.

This shop only services higher-end shocks. I figured as much, but I thought it was worth an ask. Rear wheels were a better selection, but the same price range.

I’m quite nervous to jump in and get started, even though I also feel as if I can’t wait! I’m wondering about the rear wheel situation. My back is in spasm today and I really don’t feel like doing so much disassembly on my living room rug just now. I think what I’ll do is come up with a plan, an order of operations … and then check eBay. I also should come up with a more exacting budget to keep my head out of the clouds. I will post an “expense sheet” sometime soon to help in this process.

Day 2

Sunday, October 01, 2006

I take a look on eBay for rear wheels that are compatible. I find one that is PERFECT, except that it is located in England and is too costly to ship for my budget. The front wheel that came with the bike has a Deore XT hub on a nice double-walled rim, and I would like to pick up something comparable. There is nothing else on eBay in Canada meeting that description as well as being within my price range. No bike shops are open today, so I have to wait until tomorrow (and until my back spasms hopefully subside) to pick up parts. I measure and inspect and make a shopping list:

2 brake cables

2 derailleur cables

4’ of brake cable housing (I measure what is existing and record it)

0’ of derailleur housing (I plan to re-use what is there, or if I have to, some from my used pile)

2 pairs of brake pads, specific to V-brakes

1 seat post (I take out my measuring tape and guess it has a diametre of 27 or 27.2 mm)

1 bicycle chain (the crank says “IG CHAIN ONLY” and the shifter is an 8 speed)

1 pair of bicycle grips

Questions to ask:

-Does the bike shop service suspension forks?

-Do you know if you have to take the shifters apart to replace the cable?

The Beginnings ....

For 30 September 2006

It started last fall. Actually, it started before I was born. Dumpster-diving, junkyard-scrounging, auction-sniping … it’s all in my genes … on both sides. My father has decided to prohibit trailer hitches on his car. Me, I’ve prohibited myself from owning bolt cutters, but that gene comes more from my mother’s side.
Anyway, last fall I had looked so very forward to attending the Police Bike Auction. Birthdays? Thanksgiving? End of exams? Not on my calendar. But the Police Bike Auction … YOU BET! But alas, I had to tour the brownfields of the city and visit the water treatment plant for a class I was taking at the time and COULD NOT ATTEND! I was devastated. So, I had to wait until the spring for the next one. I hate being patient. So I waited oh those many months, only to discover that I had an exam that day, April 12. Again, I was devastated.

So when this past Saturday, September 30, 2006 arrived, I was beside myself. I went to 401 Auto where the auction was to take place the Friday afternoon before and they let me take a look. The bikes were all piled up and the light wasn’t great, but I was able to pick out a handful I was interested in. Most were newer lower-end department store bikes, or older lower-end road bikes, neither of which I was especially interested in.

The next day, I borrowed a friend’s car, filled my backpack with wrenches, attached a tape measure to my belt and off I went.

I arrived about 30 minutes before the auction was to start. Now with better lighting, I took a better look around, tape measure in hand. The Cannondale MTB I had seen turned out to be a low-end model. The auctioneer would later claim that it had been $3000 new. It went for the most of all the bikes at somewhere around $450. The Gary Fisher in stunning yellow I had picked out, likewise was a lower-end model. The Specialized Stump Jumper I was most looking forward to bidding on was claimed by its former owner part way through, so it never made it to the auction block.

The bike I walked away with was an ugly pile. I had never even heard of the makers name, Muddy Fox, applied in a simple and cheap-looking font to the downtube, now hard to make out through the heavily chipped paintjob. Someone had attached a couple bullet-hole stickers to the frame and removing them further peeled the paint off. It was missing its seat post (and seat), the brake pads were worn almost to the metal, and the alloy pedals were smashed and jingly. The cables for the rear brake floated loose, making it look broken instead of just disconnected, and the rear derailleur cable was detached and wound around the seat stay.

An ugly pile it may have been, but one with a complete XT/XTR group, Ritchey stem and headset, and a Rock Shox fork!

I was lucky. Only one other person knew what it was – knew it wasn’t just a pile – and he was a nice guy who already had picked up a ton of old bikes. I had seen him before, working at the local bike shop I frequent. I took it for $75. People were looking at me as if they were thinking, “Why would they pay that much for THAT pile of crap! It needs SO much work!”

That's what they thought.

I was pleased. I pranced to my bike pile (I ended up taking 6 home that day), grinning from ear to ear. When the gavel came down, I thought I would just strip it for parts, but as the morning went on, I measured it, stood over it … it grew on me. I thought, “Well, if I find a better frame, I can always just transfer the parts over.”

It took two trips go get all the bikes from the 401 Auction place. I picked up four for the Yellow Bike Action Centre. I think they cost $9.00 total. The other two came home with me, one being the “diamond in the rough with XT gear” and the other being a Bianchi “Hi-Mn” womens/mixte frame with 700C wheels and Sugino GT cranks. It’s really quite a decent bike, and doesn’t need much to make it road worthy. The tubes need patching and the rear brake line needs to be replaced, but that seems to be about it. It does have two somewhat major problems, however: The seat post is stuck and the cranks (the part I bought the bike for) won’t come off the spindle.

That afternoon, I took to the internet to try to find out more about the bike. The only useful link I found was a review by Togoparts, which appears to be some kind of bike community site.
A Muddy Fox Rockwood 5040 it would appear to be. I like both rocks and wood, but what is the significance of the “5040”?
